Gelle, good to hear from you. If you want, I can put you on the list of men who are interested in research protocols ( 2 being developed) that will use either metabolomics or stem cells to increase the odds of finding sperm (http://turekonmenshealth.com/2010/02/07/metobolomics-the-picture-of-fatherhood/) or creating it. Neither is prime time yet. Just let me know.

Joe, You are a good man to look after your friend. Validated and authentic stem cell treatments for male infertility are currently not available. However, your friend may still have the possibility of having sperm at this time; it depends on how hard the doctors looked for sperm. Think of sperm production as apples on a tree branch. Depending on which branch you look at you may see apples or not. Be happy to talk with him; call 415-392-3200.

Hi Doctor,

My friend has been tried to have a kid, but unfortunately, the doctor said that he has sertoli only syndrome and there's impossible to produce sperm. I read about the stem cell treatment and just wondering if the stem cell treatment in sertoli cell only syndrome can be done?

If it's possible how long does it take to be able to produce sperm?

Thanks Doctor

Ernie, Sounds like you have nonobstructive azoospermia. Wondering whether your doctors identified any genetic (y chromosome or other chromosome) or non-genetic (variocele, exposures, medications, illness) causes. In our previous research, we have observed that about half of men with this condition and this biopsy pattern have a genetic cause, either definable or not, and the others might not. Interestingly, we have also found that men with early maturation arrest can have sperm if: (a) you look harder than a biopsy does at more places in the testis (see: http://www.theturekclinic.com/testicular-mapping.html), (b) remove insults such as recurrent fevers, illness, certain medication or varicoceles or (c) add FSH injections (expensive) for a period of several months to "push" sperm production past the point of the arrest. The point is that there is hope with this biopsy pattern.

DEAR DR. TUREK,
MY SPERM TEST SHOWED A HIGHER FSH LEVEL,AND NO SPERM AT ALL.
I HAD A BIOPSY WHICH RESULT CONCLUDED THAT THERE IS A MATURATION ARREST AT THE PRIMARY LEVEL.
I AM 48 NOW. WHAT CAN I DO TO BECOME A BIOLOGICAL FATHER. REALLY DESPERATE.
ERNIE

When the first report on the WiFi effect came out, I don't really believe that it has much effect on the fertility of sperms. Your article has reinforce my believe, and further more if it has a health effect than a lot of body cells will be affected.

It was invented in San Francisco and offered by me here and by fellows that I have trained in other countries including Israel, Argentina, Turkey, among others. Honestly, I haven't trained any fellows who practice in Canada. Maybe consider a long weekend trip to San Francisco!

Marium, although some kinds of y chromosome deletions might suggest that there will be no usable sperm in the testis (AZFa and AZFb deletions in particular), others are associated with substantial chances (AZFc, 60-70% chance of sperm). A simple testis biopsy has the lowest chance of finding sperm compared to FNA mapping (http://www.theturekclinic.com/testicular-mapping.html) or a microdissection. Best of luck!

Hi doctor. My husband just found out that he too is azoospermic but not due to a blockage but the doctor thinks its because there is a part of his y chromosome which is reversed. Is this considered a deletion? Is there still a chance that he can produce sperm and if not is there a chance that there could be viable sperm if we do a biopsy.

Karim, hard to say. Typically, when even small numbers of sperm are found in the ejaculate, FNA Mapping can find sperm in the testis. However, with a testis biopsy, things are much more variable. Ask your doctor! Good luck.
